Dan Russo is an expert criminal defense attorney. He skillfully represents clients who have been arrested and charged with a variety of crimes, ranging from Driving While Intoxicated to Money Laundering to Homicide, in both state and federal courts. Dan is an experienced negotiator and a formidable litigator. He has handled criminal cases for over twenty years, achieving countless favorable results by either negotiating advantageous pleas or securing Not Guilty verdicts after trial.
Additionally, Dan’s practice focuses on litigation arising from disputes involving trusts and estates. He is Of Counsel to the Law Office of Patricia Harold, representing parties on various issues in Surrogate’s Court in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
Dan began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney in Kings County (Brooklyn), New York, where he prosecuted misdemeanor and violent felony cases up to and including trial. After his time in the Brooklyn DA’s Office, Dan moved to private practice where he held positions as an associate and partner in boutique law firms, focusing on criminal defense.
Dan is the current President of the Nassau County Bar Association, having been installed as the 122nd President of the Association on June 4th, 2024. Prior to becoming President, Dan served as the Dean of the Nassau Academy of Law and past chair of the Criminal Law and Procedure Committee. Dan has published articles on topics including the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment; criminal procedure in New York City courts; and the criminal defense attorney’s obligations to clients during plea negotiations, among many others.
Dan received his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Political Science from Hofstra University in 1996. At Hofstra, Dan excelled at both academics and athletics as a four-year member of the Hofstra Ice Hockey team and a member of the Dean’s List. During his senior year, Dan was the recipient of a prestigious internship awarded by Hofstra University, in conjunction with American University in Washington D.C., and spent a semester on Capitol Hill as an intern for a United States Congressman.
Following his graduation from college, Dan attended Fordham University School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1999. During his tenure at Fordham Law, Dan achieved the position of Notes and Articles Editor of the Fordham Urban Law Journal and published a student article in the same publication during his third year of law school.
Dan is admitted to practice law in New York State and in the federal Courts of the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. Born and raised on Long Island, he currently resides on the Island’s South Shore with his wife and daughter.
